“A recent study suggests that 75 percent of the weight-loss response in obesity is predicted by insulin levels.29 Not willpower. Not caloric intake. Not peer support or peer pressure. Not exercise. Just insulin.” - Jason Fung

“Carbohydrates should be enjoyed in their natural, whole, unprocessed form. Many traditional diets built around carbohydrates cause neither poor health nor obesity. Remember the toxicity in much Western food lies in the processing, rather than in the food itself.” - Jason Fung

“Our weight plateaus and ruthlessly climbs back up to our original body set weight, even as we keep dieting. Clearly, changing what we eat is not always enough.” - Jason Fung

“Throughout most of human history, obesity has been rare. Individuals in traditional societies eating traditional diets seldom became obese, even in times of abundant food.” – Jason Fung

“Even the National Cholesterol Education Program admits, “The percentage of total fat in the diet, independent of caloric intake, has not been documented to be related to body weight.” - Jason Fung

Book Summary Overview

Obesity is a bigger problem than anyone imagined and its rates have increased rapidly over the years. Since it’s an epidemic spreading its tentacles worldwide, it’s now critical that we find a solution to this nagging problem. There are way too many studies and trials conducted out there, and while some diets may suggest that you consume foods with low carbohydrates, other diets may suggest something else. It can get pretty confusing, and that’s perhaps why most dieters give up.

"The Obesity Code" focuses on the intake of traditional, unprocessed foods that have been forgotten long ago. This book covers everything from the science behind the foods you're eating to what you should eat at each meal. Understanding diet and exercise are NOT the key to weight loss is the first step to breaking the Obesity Code.

The original book is fabulous. This summary is poorly done. I am very familiar with the original book. I bought this to help family members get the main ideas of the real book. To my great disappointment, on every page of this summary, that I examined, I easily found statements that: are outright errors (got the idea backwards), or that miss the main point(s), or steer the reader in the wrong direction, or provide the wrong (or unclear) emphasis.. Save your money and your time. Buy, or check out from a public library the original book - it is great. Avoid this summary!

Summary of The Obesity Code Includes Key Takeaways Analysis FastReads 9781540450456 Books Reviews

This was a waste of money. I hear the full length book is awesome, but don't waste your money on the summary. I've learned more from Dr. Fung's online videos than anything in this booklet. It's only 22 pages and it just seems hacked up and not well done. I didn't learn anything from it.
This is a Fast Reads summary of The Obesity Code by Jason Fung. The original book was groundbreaking in educating the public on the true causes of obesity, and attempting to remove the stigma associated to those suffering from this disease. I have to say, I have read a few different summary books, and this one was not quite up to the standard of the others, but I do still think it has some value for the reader. As with other summary books, reading this may persuade or dissuade you from purchasing the original book, as it did for some other readers who left reviews. Some readers found it a little less technical in writing than the book, so it made the content easier to understand. I will say that if you are suffering with obesity, I think the tips in this book have been proven to be successful, and they are medically safe to try.
I'm not able to recommend this "summary" because it's more of a tease than a summary, which raises more questions than answers.
Fast Reads' summary of The Obesity Code is not as well done as those by Summary and Analysis. The formulaic style is not as comprehensive as Summary and Analysis. The key points/facts at the end sometimes do not appear in the preceding discussion and at times appear to have no relation to the chapter under discussion. Still the reader gets an overall idea of what to expect if they should decide to read Jason Fung's book on the science behind losing weight in a scientific and reasonable manner. Myths behind and which prop up the popularity of fad diets, wonder cures, exercising and calorie and carb counting are explained. Healthy and truly nutritious foods that actually promote weight loss versus the official or accepted wisdom of nutrition is explained. The function of a body's metabolism and an individual's weight set point is likewise explained. It was a much faster read for me. I cannot say that I gained a lot from reading the summary though it appears that I am doing a lot of what Jung recommends to lose weight and maintain the weight loss and be healthy. Whether it is because of the subject matter or how The Obesity Code was written, or for other reasons, I expect I could have read traditional reviews of The Obesity Code and still gotten a good idea of whether I wanted to read the actual book.
This "summary" is so horribly written I'm left not only disappointed by its incoherent composition, but *angry* that I wasted my time reading it. I've read its full-length counterpart, and while that book is thoughtfully laid out, with informatively and logically built up claims, this one is a hacked up, stitched-together mess whose chapters vary in useful detail and whose "takeaways" often bear little relation to the text they summarize, often introducing new ideas rather than recapping earlier elucidated ones. Some examples

- Chapter how obesity became an epidemic
-- Takeaway when the AHA announced that people need to consume high ...

What? There's no mention of the AHA in the chapter; how does it suddenly appear in the takeaway? This sort of distanced chapters/takeaways seem more common than not; it's nearly as if chapters follow one plot and takeaways another.

- Chapter the overfeeding paradox
-- excerpt "... after the tests were stopped, the participants returned to their normal body weight, thereby proving that just like overeating wasn't responsible for permanent weight gain, eating less wouldn't cause weight loss that lasted forever."

Nonsense! Showing the one relation doesn't automatically prove the other! Please don't bother describing experiments if conclusions drawn aren't supported by them.

There's more, but I'm unwilling to waste more time than I have already.

Again -- I've read the original "The Obesity Code", *enjoyed* it and consider it the best new idea I've come across in describing obesity it's well-composed, well-written, logically developed, and persuasively concluded. By contrast this "summary" should be used to clean dog p**p.

If it turns out this summary really was written by Dr. Fung, I'll keep it as a mark of respect for the work that went into the original; if it turns out the summary was written by somebody else, a ghost writer, I'm demanding my money back!
