Most of us associate Aphrodite – also known as Venus – with love, beauty, and fertility, but the symbolic value of this goddess is by far more complex than we would have known or dared to believe.
The remarkable and unique ancient civilization of the Cypriots is also reflected in their cults and religious perceptions. From the earliest prehistory, a Fertility Goddess and her retinue of deities were worshiped to sustain life dependent on the soil. Gradually the Goddess received the name Aphrodite, who was the goddess of love and considered to originate from ancient Cyprus. The cult of a bearded Aphrodite or Venus, in whose honor people engaged in transvestite rituals, seems to have been widely spread in Cyprus. Ever since prehistory, many Cypriot sculptures have an obvious bisexual character.

the Neolithic images show mother and child god. Aphrodite is all female and self stuffiest. poorly researched has nothing to do with Hermes and Aphrodite merging to create an adrogyn. That myth could have been interpreted in creating a child too. in addition this discuss middle Easter deities, not Roman.
I have always been fascinated with history. This book is a journey back in time, in an era much different than our own. It explores the connections between all the peoples of the then known world with Cyprus at the epicenter of all ancient crossroads. The book examines a rather obscure cult of the very famous goddess, Aphrodite (Venus to those more accustomed to her Latin name). The bearded goddess, a bisexual/hermaphrodidic entity that possesses the best of both worlds, at least in the minds of the cults' followers. In addition, the book examines in plain language the evolution of this entity, tracing its lineage to all major cultures of this wonderful yet troubled region. The author, the well known archaeologist Marie-Louise Winbladh, uses plain language in order to enlighten her audience, not confuse them with scientific jargon, and also incorporates dozens of rare and unique photos with regards to the subject. I thoroughly recommend this book to all who are interested in history, ancient religions and alternative perceptions. You can only move forward if you are aware of your past....
